ELISABETH --AT AW aj AW HOPKINS Lot Bhow mt p. tn. 5 Stage Acts 5 VAUDEVILLE Richard Dix-'ARIZONIAN' Calling to Ysabel to make for tha cliffs. Chris staggered to his feet and darted through the yelling and excited crowd, his voice roaring through their cemoralized shrieks with a boom of authority as be ordered the vaqueros to light the fire before It got beyond them. Guido Alvado's voice answered him from the dark confusion, and the next minute he was beside him and the two took command, not daring to stop to look for any individual until the fire was under control.

Working with frenzied energy, the vaqueros rallied under Chris and threw dirt on the flames while Guido Alvado and his father organized a bucket brigade to bring water from the reserve tanks that were always kept filled for such an emergency. The terrorizing glow with Its menace of destruction gradually subsided, and after what seemed an eternity of struggle, but was actually only a few minutes, the danger of fire was stamped out. In one of the fitful glimpses that had flashed into his consciousness through the kaleidoscopio nightmare of those moments Chris had seen Rocky through a broken window in the glowing sala pulling down curtains and draperies and stamping out the flames as he directed the men who brought the buckets of water where to use them to the best advantage. With relief Chris noted that no cries of pain mingled with the shrill hysterical shrieking that still made the darkness hideous, and. Judging that all had had time to get out before the walls of the ranchcria had crumbled, his mind flew back to the scene that had had such a dramatic Interruption.

Realizing that Guido Ortega and Ramon might well choose this confusion to make their escape, Chris rushed over to the hacienda and groped his way to the door, calling to Rocky as he went. At the sound of his voice, a dark figure detached Itself from a group by the steps and rushed toward him. Sensing rather than seeing his danger, Chris sidestepped and ducked as a knife whizzed past his ear and lodged In the door frame behind him. The next instant he whirled and dove for the knees of his assailant, bringing him down with a crash, then grappling with the wiry, struggling figure until he managed to twist his arms behind him and peer into his face. It was no surprise to meet the eyes of Ramon Ortega glaring into his.

With a grim satisfaction Chris gripped his arms twisted behind him with one hand as he slipped the other into his pocket and brought out the handcuffs he had never been without since coming to this hostile country. It was the work of a second to clasp them on Ramon's wrists and transfer his grip to the shoulder of the struggling figure. The game's up, Ortega." Chris looked at the dark shapes crowding curiously about them. I'm the deputy sherif of Monterey county," he explained tersely, and I arrest Ramon Ortega for murder and abduction." Before the crowd could recover from their astonishment at this announcement a tall form appeared in the doorway and Chris hailed him. Take charge of Ramon Ortega, Kocky.

I must find his father." Before Rocky could answer, Josfe Alvado sprang out of the darkness. I will take charge of my brother's murderer! In a flash Chris dropped Ramon and gripped the uplifted arm of the would-be avenger, twisting the knife from his hand. In the confusion a light gleamed down the hall and Senor Alvado appeared with a lantern that threw a flickering glow over the extraordinary scene. Chris still had his hold on Jose's upraised arm while Rocky held Ramon In a grip of iron. With the appearance of light to dispel the weird uncertainty of what was actually happening, excited oaths and comments burst out from the crowd, but Rocky held up his other hand for silence.

Guido Ortega has been judged by a higher court than yours," he announced to Chris. Curiosity overcoming the fear of another tremor, the crowd stampeded to the door of the sala and Senor Alvado muttered a strangled Dios de mi alma!" as he held his lantern high to light the room. Sprawled under the heavy chandelier, which had fallen on his head, lay the body of Guido Ortega. Chris formed a hasty resolve as his mind flashed to the possible effect this might have on the excited vaqueros of the two outfits in loosing all the pent up passions of the feud. "Wait!" his voice cut through the first murmurlngs that broke the amazed silence that greeted the gruesome sight.

"Not a word of this must get outside until Ysabel has explained to the Alvado family what course she means to take. All of you here go Into the court. Rocky, you keep guard ol Ramon Ortega; and you, Jose, find Ysabel and Francesca." Rapping out his orders with an authority that surprised the crowd Into obedience. Chris herded them all into the court, realizing the danger of a panic if there should be another tremor while they were Inside the hacienda. Senor Alvado was one of the last to step out, his lantern shaking in his trembling hands.

Realizing the strong emotions he was laboring under as the combined result of the earthquake, Ysabel's revelations, and the safe return of Jose, Chris crossed over to his side as Guido took the lantern from his father's hand. There is no need to worry," he dropped his voice, but Ysabel must be the one to tell you." As though in answer to his words Ysabel appeared at the arched entrance to the court with Jose, and behind them Francesca, clinging tightly to the arm of Roberto Gomez.
